New interchange open at 17th Avenue in Pensacola
Construction crews have opened the new interchange at 17th Avenue in Pensacola. The interchange is designed to improve safety and enhance mobility at the Pensacola landing of the new bridge.
Gone is the traffic signal formerly at the 17th Avenue intersection. In its place is a flyover ramp connecting the Pensacola Bay Bridge westbound to either East Gregory Street or Bayfront Parkway. Beneath the flyover ramp is a new, single-lane roundabout that provides seamless travel between the bridge, 17th Avenue north and southbound, Bayfront Parkway, and East Gregory Street.
With the new interchange open, two lanes of both east and westbound bridge traffic will continue to share the eventual eastbound (Pensacola to Gulf Breeze) bridge while work continues to complete the westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) structure.
In the final configuration, the new Pensacola Bay Bridge will consist of two parallel bridges, each equipped with three travel lanes, inside and outside shoulders, and adjacent multiuse paths for pedestrians and bicyclists. The $430 million project is currently estimated for completion in mid-to-late 2022.
