Pensacola Bay Bridge design-build contractor observed the organization’s 15th Annual Health and Safety Week, May 6-10. The week was highlighted by numerous training sessions, safety exercises, and workshops designed to raise awareness for construction work place safety.

On Wednesday, May 8 the Skanska team hosted a fire and rescue demonstration on the new eastbound bridge that is currently under construction. On hand for a simulated “high rescue drill” were members of the Escambia County Fire Department, as well as representatives of local media. The drill simulated several falls from the new bridge and the subsequent rescue efforts.

Emergency responders arrived on the scène of the simulated falls and worked diligently to rescue “Randy,” a dummy used in training exercises. The final simulation was a fall from the bridge deck. It required a member of the emergency response team to repel from a truck ladder to make the rescue.

Several members from the Skanska team joined to participate in and observe the rescue exercises. Throughout the activities, company leadership stressed Skanska’s commitment to provide an injury free workplace along with a working environment that supports employee well-being.
