Project Update: Oct. 20, 2022

The Pensacola Bay Bridge team’s progress has come a long way this fall. Here are some numbers that reflect what’s been accomplished:

  • Trophy piece installation is 100% complete.
  • Placement of the 1,283 concrete piles and girders needed for the westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) bridge is 100% complete.
  • Work at the concrete casting yard at Bayou Chico is 100% complete.
  • Crews are 96% complete with pouring the new concrete decks for the westbound bridge.

Along the Gulf Breeze shore, the U.S. 98 approach, the wayside park access roads, and parking area beneath the bridge have all been paved. The team is now focused on placing brick pavers in the median areas of the parking lot and restoring the sidewalk along the waterfront.

In Pensacola, crews have paved the approach to the new bridge as well as Bayfront Parkway. In this area, the team remains focused on placing sidewalk east of Bayfront Parkway, grading the shoreline, and placing rip rap as a safeguard against erosion.

Once complete, the bridge will accommodate three lanes of both east and westbound traffic. In addition, inside and outside shoulders will flank the travel lanes and be available for emergency vehicles and vehicle breakdowns.

As a reminder, the multiuse path along the eastbound (Pensacola to Gulf Breeze) bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists. Construction of the westbound multiuse path continues and will be open when traffic is shifted to the westbound bridge later this year.

The entire project is estimated for completion early next year.
