The Florida Department of Transportation has re-opened the Pensacola Bay Bridge and the 17th Avenue interchange. The majority of the bridge is now open to four lanes of traffic (two in each direction) except for a two-lane, half-mile segment just west of the bridge’s arch while work to complete final repairs continues.
The speed limit is temporarily set at 35 mph and emergency refuge areas are available on the bridge. The construction team has created this animation to illustrate the temporary traffic configuration on the bridge and the Pensacola approach.
17th Avenue Interchange Detour
This graphic depicts the new, temporary traffic configuration exiting the bridge in Pensacola as work continues on the 17thAvenue interchange. Drivers have access to a new “slip ramp” that connects to 17thAvenue northbound. Continuing straight will take vehicles over a newly constructed flyover bridge to Gregory Street.
In the final configuration, a new single-lane roundabout will be available beneath the flyover bridge. The roundabout will replace the traffic signal formerly at 17th Avenue and Bayfront Parkway.
Completion of all construction, which includes both the eastbound (Pensacola to Gulf Breeze) and westbound (Gulf Breeze to Pensacola) bridges, as well as the new 17th Avenue interchange is planned for January 2022.
